Ray, 15, just completed his freshman year of high school. He began riding at CTRC in September of 2022 after his family connected with the organization at the recommendation of other parents in the Rocky Mountain Down Syndrome Association’s Longmont area group.
Ever since September of 2022, CTRC has been more than a weekly activity spot for Ray —it has become a family affair. His parents, Pam and David, and his older brothers, Carl and Andy, all trained as volunteers and have supported Ray and other riders in his classes as sidewalkers and horse leaders.
Therapeutic riding has been a powerful tool in helping Ray grow as both a rider and a communicator. Though he faces significant speech challenges, CTRC has supported the development of his verbal communication by giving him the motivation and confidence to speak clear, purposeful words – such as, “Walk on!” and “Whoa!” – as he interacts with his horse. At the same time, he’s learned to communicate in nonverbal ways—through leg cues, rein pressure, body position, and eye focus.
These lessons have helped Ray build clarity, trust, and connection both in and out of the saddle. His slow but sure growth in many areas reflects the heart of CTRC’s mission. And his family’s involvement is a beautiful example of the strong community behind every rider’s journey.
