Medicaid Gap fund featuring the Jim Barber Scholarship Fund

Jim Barber first became involved with CTRC when his wife, Julie, became a volunteer. He started helping at various events and with different special projects at the center. Later, he did much of the class and event photography. He enjoyed and admired all of the riders. Being a Texas boy, he especially became close to one group of riders, who were retired cowboys. He loved visiting with them and getting to know their stories. Trips to CTRC became the highlight of his week! After his passing in 2015, a scholarship fund was established to honor his love of CTRC. This funding will be earmarked for filling the new Medicaid gap.

The Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center (CTRC) is facing an unexpected funding gap following recent changes to Colorado’s Medicaid program. While the state aimed to increase support for equine-assisted therapy, adjustments made through the House Bill 22-1068 have unintentionally created financial strain for CTRC, which has been serving the community for 45 years.

Impact on CTRC: Approximately 80% of our equine-assisted therapy clients are on Medicaid. While therapists at CTRC have received increased rates in response to the new Medicaid reimbursement structure, these funds are insufficient to cover the full costs of equine-assisted therapy. This has left CTRC in a challenging position, especially as we continue to serve a growing number of participants with specialized needs.

Without this funding, we risk significantly impacting the quality of care we provide, as well as our ability to maintain our facilities and horses. Given that we already operate on slim margins, the $30,000 gap could have a profound effect on our ability to sustain our programs and continue serving the community.

Call to Action: In response to these challenges, CTRC is launching a new scholarship program, with a goal to raise $30,000 annually, to help offset these costs. This fund will provide financial support to ensure that CTRC can continue its critical work in the community without compromising the care of its horses or the quality of therapy services.
